It's Not The Rocky Horror Muppet Show

Kermit the Frog sang about how it ain't easy being green, but I bet Jim Henson couldn't have imagined having to perform it in soprano.

And what about Miss Piggy? She certainly couldn't have imagined something like this. Somebody somewhere is in line for a karate-chop if it happened to the frog of her life.

No, it definitely ain't easy being green — Not with contaminants like Atrazine in the water. It's a common herbicide used all over the world. And according to researchers, it causes male frogs to grow lady parts.

Sex changes for frogs.

I'm not talking about some Rocky Horror Muppet Show. This is real science. Researchers at Berkeley recently released a study that found this weed killer to be the cause of male frogs under observation becoming egg-laying females.

Obviously Kermit doesn't have to worry about it, and neither — rest his soul — does Jim Henson. But I wonder about the rest of us. According to Inhabitat, Atrazine had been a suspected link to certain cancers, and outlawed in Europe since 2003.

Today's Theme Thursday topic is green.

Well, it's certainly true that I'm not an expert. And it's also worth noting that I'm not a reporter who's verified this independently -- I'm a mockingbird sharing information the press reported to me. But this story has been covered by enough credible news organizations, that I'm satisfied the Berkeley study exists. Whether or not it's true is a question for science - I'll wait for a report from researchers who've disproved this hypothesis before I change my mind.

Yikes. I hope Atrazine isn't in the well water I drink every day. It might turn me into a frog.

I know, right? Thankfully, I haven't seen any research to suggest that possibility.

But I wonder about the opposite. What if Disney has to re-write fairy tales about kissing frogs? Oy, what a surprise for the princess looking for her Prince Charming.

2008 was the Year of the Frog.

It's 2010 now, but it feels more like 1997.

hmmm. Well, I hope 1997 was a good year for you then. I think it was for me. I like the idea of just turning the clock back.

      Nah.

      Thanks for stopping by.

Well thanks Bonnie! But the whole Kermit thing is not much of a frog leap.

Yeah, I don't know how the creators of the Muppets would feel about this association. It's a little twisted.
