Photo Friday: Road to the North Rim

Grand Canyon National Park
Road to the North Rim — September 2008

I woke up this morning in the Eastern Time Zone with a head still observing Pacific. I'm not where I intended to be because of bad weather. The whole reason I'm traveling, in fact, is due to a bit of personal bad weather, and it's — to say the least — frustrating that Mother Nature is not cooperating.

So as I sit here in a cloud gauging the clouds outside, I'm reminded of a different trip. Rufus and I took a spur-of-the-moment drive to the Grand Canyon because we needed to clear our heads. We went to the North Rim, which is accessed by a beautiful drive along a meadow lined with trees. We were disappointed that there was rain on the day we visited.

The way in was wet and gloomy, and the canyon was darkened by clouds. That place is like church to me, so it didn't matter. But we cut our visit somewhat short just the same. On the way back to the highway along the pretty tree-lined drive, we got a gift for enduring the weather:

Rainbows. Not one, but two. The biggest either of us had ever seen. Huge colorful arches creating a dome of light over the meadow. We could see where the bottom one touched the ground on both ends. It was magical, and a good thing for me to remember today.
