Snow Falling on Cactus: An Anti-Aging Conference

Red Rock Canyon - Las Vegas, NV

Today's Theme Thursday topic is SNOW, which is good timing because we just got a dusting of the stuff the other day. Snow falling on cactus? Sometimes.

I never expected to see snow in the Mojave, but Las Vegas gets a bit every year. Late night talk show hosts joke that hell has frozen over on the rare occasion it falls on the city. But the outskirts of town are at higher elevation, against mountains with a wintertime cap of white.

Now, some of you may be reading this from areas buried from the recent wide-reaching storm, in which case, you'll find this snow report laughable. But go ahead. Because when I took a ride out to Red Rock Canyon to see it, I found lots of people doing just that.

There was a retirement-age couple standing with me at this viewpoint. I waited for them to finish drawing hearts in the snow like lovelorn teenagers before they moved out of the frame.

Then I met some young travelers from Switzerland who were shocked to see snow on their desert escape. The guy was taking action shots of his girlfriend jumping around in mini skirt and sandals. They live in the land of the Alps, but the snow still made them playful.

Another couple I met was in town from Hawaii. They seemed more prepared for cold weather.

"We're here for an anti-aging conference," the woman said. "Starts Thursday at Mandalay Bay."

Our conversation was interrupted when she got beamed in the head with a snowball. She giggled like a schoolgirl and reached for some ammunition to get her husband back.

In town for an anti-aging conference. Isn't it something that it was almost like being on one that day? Snow somehow always brings out the kids in us. So if it's near you, go out and play!

Snow in Death Valley is REALLY cool. Well, to me more accurate, snow at the top of Death Valley.

    Meh, semantics.

Never been there in winter, but I bet it is a beautiful sight. I would never have visited DV if I didn't live so close, but it's definitely worth checking out. Thanks for your comment.

If I'd ever lived somewhere that gets the kind of snow that has to be shoveled, I'd probably be singing a different tune. But I'm with you in hoping for it: Let it snow! (and then melt quickly because weather that cold was a fluke.)

Cheaper too, I bet. Vegas has all kinds of conventions and conferences, and I didn't look this one up. I hope its attendees learn good stuff.

When I first started living in the desert, all I saw was a sea of boring brown. Then I really started to explore it and all the INCREDIBLE things around. I have really grown to love it. Thanks for your comment!

Sometimes it snows in the mountains about an hour from Sydney and people do just that, drive up to play for a day. It rarely sticks more than 12 hours but for some, it's their first experience of the white stuff! Looks pretty surreal in the desert though.

It's like the best of both worlds to live somewhere with mild winter weather that has snow within an easy drive, no? I'm sure Sydney is great to explore any time of year. Thanks for your comment!
