Pap Schmears: Totally the Gift of the Season
![]() |
I didn't recognize the actor, and rewound it to watch again at least three times. I was looking for some reference to this spokesperson as a comedian.
No.
It's not satire.
The Colombia Broadcasting Network sincerely cares.
The latest cause-marketing campaign from CBS reminds us that women's health is important. It speaks to men about what their women want this year instead of blenders... Pap Smears are totally the gift of the season.
Thankfully the creators of this campaign had enough sensitivity to include those who don't believe in Santa. Women of all faiths need their pink parts checked out too. The Hanukkah version of this gift suggestion is even more brilliant. In :12-seconds it manages to incorporate holiday gift-giving, health care, an anatomy pun, and food:
[note: apparently I can only add one video per post. Please click here to watch this masterpiece on YouTube.]
Pap Schmears save lives!
schmear [SHMEER]
Thought to have come from the Yiddish word shmirn ("to smear or grease"), the word schmear is used in the culinary world to describe a dab of something like mayonnaise or cream cheese that's spread on a roll, bagel, etc.
Schedule one and light up her Menorah!
(Minora... Majora... all the parts need annual check-ups.)
The timing of this campaign is interesting. If you've been following the news lately, you know there's been great confusion about guidelines for the frequency of pap smears and mammograms — two cancer screenings critical to women's health. On the heels of a controversial recommendation that women delay breast cancer screenings from age 40 to age 50, it was announced that pap smears — cervical cancer screenings — were not needed on an annual basis or necessary until age 21. The merits of these studies are still being volleyed between medical organizations, and politicized as part of the ongoing health care debate. All this is leaving women wondering what to believe.
Though it's probably a coincidence this campaign coincides with a hot debate in the news, I'm all for women's health awareness. And the beauty is that every time someone makes fun of this campaign is another chance to talk about it. I revised my letter to Santa ask for versions of this knee-slapper by spokespeople from other networks too. Hello? Like Troy McClure, Michael Scott, and Larry David? While I was at it, I asked for something we all want more than a pap smear. Don't know if he'll deliver this year, but I asked anyway... for a cure.
PS:
Guys, please DO NOT give your wives or girlfriends a doctor visit as a gift unless you want to be given a boot out the door. Here's a suggestion: Buy jewelry. She'll love a pair of earrings much more.

No, wait, that wasn't for real, right? I mean, I'm all for promoting women's health - especially in the wake of all the confusing "new" regulations - but this isn't a "real" CBS PSA! It just can't be!!!
For the record, I've already had my pap this year, so I'd much prefer a book or a necklace or, heck, some chocolate. Something brown to remind me of my "pink parts" - LOL!

I had the same initial reaction, but I saw it with my own eyes on TV. Then I found it on the CBS website. I showed it to my friend Roxanne last night, and we laughed our guts out until she told me to take my minora home. It IS real, but I have to believe it is a joke. A clever, clever marketing tactic that will for sure get a surefire reaction about the topic at hand.

I saw this and nearly died laughing. Then I realized it was real. I turned to my fiance and said, "How about it, hon, would you like a pap smear for Christmas?" She threatened me with bodily harm.
What's next, the traditional Easter prostate exam? "Look where we hid the egg THIS year!"

You should be on staff at CBS -- I'm sure they're holding meetings now for the big Easter campaign. Thanks for the laugh!

Have you seen the one with Jack Black pimping mamorgrams?

I had not, but I just found it on youtube. It had me at the title... "Jack Black saves some boobs."
Oh, health humor.
