This Post Brought To You By The Letter "Y"

Maybe it's because images commemorating the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street are referenced all over the web, but when I saw that this week's Theme Thursday topic was TELEPHONE, a little voice in my head went, "Brrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnng!"

Yip Yip Yip.

Do you remember when the Yip Yip Aliens met the telephone? I do. When I was a kid, my Mother would sometimes wake me up this way. Of course, I knew she was imitating a telephone and not an alarm clock, because I used to talk to dear ole Granny on one of those rotary-dial things.

On Sesame Street, it was the aliens who didn't know what a phone was. Kids watching thought that was funny.

It's not lost me that today's Sesame Street audience has more in common with the Yip Yips, because, to them, a telephone is something alien. Sure, they may know what that noisy thing tethered to the wall is, but only because it's what reference books say came after two tin cans and some string.

They know a phone as something that goes in your pocket. You use it to send pictures and text messages. Like maybe a photo of the Yip Yips, with a message, like so:

"Y R U laughing at this?"

Yip Yip Yip — I giggled at The Yip Yips Meet The Telephone when I was a kid... but now I think it's funny for a completely different reason.
