Wanderlust Sunday: Within a Day's Drive
![]() This photo, taken by Wolfgang Staudt on Flickr, was snapped along Utah's State Route 12. Rand McNally denotes it as a "scenic route," which is an understatement to be sure. This road that winds through Utah back country from Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef is THE MOST spectacular "scenic drive" we've ever taken. | |
1. Joining the vacations of many out-of-town visitors.
2. Getting out of town yourself.
Rufus and I have long joked that our favorite thing about Vegas is the opportunity to get out of town. It's because we live in such an incredible regional "neighborhood" of spectacular things to see. There are so many National and State Parks, lakes, mountain vistas, beaches, and cultural treasures within a day's drive, that our definition of "easy weekend trip" has expanded over time. I've highlighted many of these places in wanderlust columns, so I put together a map of US locations mentioned with links to the features so far.
I haven't yet seen all of these places myself, and I can't help but notice a big glaring hole in the heartland. But this weekly wander-list has touched on enough spots, that it might offer inspiration to hit the road in your regional neighborhood. What do you consider an easy day's drive?

Yeah, I guess your recent Vegas post was a bit cheeky, but I liked it anyway! And while I don't always comment here, I do often read your posts, so I could probably guess some of your favorite Vegas-y things, but still, I look forward to seeing them all in one post. After all, I'm always amazed by people who can LIVE there year-round!
As for easy day's drives, well, it depends on which city I'm calling home at the moment. If I'm in New Orleans, then a trip to San Antonio is doable (though nine hours isn't really EASY). A Florida beach is probably a bit more doable. And if I'm in L.A., then a trip to Joshua Tree or Sequoia national parks is most welcome indeed.

Well, how's that for putting you on the spot? For the record, I did not mean that you should have been able to guess. I was just exploiting your question as another opportunity to talk about my favorite topic:
traveler... me.Seriously, that post was dripping with sarcasm, and I appreciate your question. There's lots to love about living here, and you made me stop to examine it. I love your road trip suggestions from LA... JTNP and Sequoia are favorites of ours as well! Have a great day.
