Photo Friday: Sedona Sun

Along Bell Rock Trail in Springtime
Sedona, AZ

Sedona, Arizona is a magical place to visit, and this photo taken along the Bell Rock Trail helps explain why. I could sit in this spot soaking in the sun and spirit of the place for the entire day.

But when the sun starts to go down, the best view is said to be Airport Mesa. At the top of the steep and winding Airport Road is an overlook spot where, at least in spring and summer when I've been there, people gather. Rufus and I loved observing that the locals really know how to appreciate a sunset. Many made a social event of it, and brought baskets with wine and cheese.

The thing that caught our attention more was the surprising size of the crowd and how everyone seemed just plain happy. When the sun finally slipped beyond the horizon, the crowd clapped.

"Hey, good effort today, Sun," Rufus said after we giggled at the applause. But it was the end of such a great day, it was totally sincere when he added, "thanks for coming out."

Thanks for coming out, indeed. Wherever you are, I hope you have a great day. For more Photo Friday travel stories, visit Delicious Baby.

There's a place in San Diego called Sunset Cliffs where people come to watch the sunset, but it's not a wine and cheese affair that I ever witnessed. And I've never seen another sunset that drew applause. It was fun.

Your description of the sunwatchers reminds me of the crowd that often gathers to watch summer sunsets at Michigan's Point Betsie Lighthouse. Folks make an evening of it, bringing out lawn chairs, picnic baskets, etc. and chill out on the beach to see the sun set over Lake Michigan.
Lovely photo. It's always interesting to see the evening and early morning light, and how it varies over time.
