Have You Seen Old Gnarly Bob?

It has been such a busy week here in TheWordWire world, and I find myself pressed for time to write. It's partly because I'm lucky enough to live in a place that people come to visit, and August has been a good month for that. I've seen some old friends recently, and have VIVs (very important visitors) on the way. Of all the things I have come to appreciate about life in Las Vegas, being included in others' vacations tops the list.

So I figured it would be appropriate to share this quick little gem I recently found tucked in a book. Between the pages of Confederacy of Dunces, which I was apparently (and appropriately) reading in the French Quarter years ago, was a crinkled postcard I never sent.

I don't know who I was writing or when specifically it was. Just an account of a day in the life when I lived in New Orleans.

Since I'm sitting at a bar on Bourbon Street, I thought I'd share the experience on a postcard. But this ain't no vacation — it still surprises me sometimes that I live here. I love it.

Went for a Saturday afternoon walk, and ducked into a dive with a funky band. A guy named Jolly Roger is wailing on the gui-tar,and a horse-and-buggy tour just paused at the door for the driver to hop off and do a jig.

An old guy just stood next to me and asked the waitress if she'd seen Manny With The Dreads today. "You sure you don't mean Old Gnarly Bob?" she asked. Whether it's the same guy or two different characters, I bet he/they could tell some stories I'd sure love to hear. But I don't know him/them. So you'll have to come visit... we can make our own stories that any Gnarly Bob might want to hear.

So I never did meet Gnarly Bob or Manny with the Dreads. But I did come away from New Orleans with some stories I love to tell. No time today though, I'm busy in Las Vegas. Getting ready to make some new stories with a favorite friend!

Happy Friday!

Bossy doesn't exactly live in the vacation capitol of the world. Lucky thing, because she doesn't have a guest room.

Ha! I'm sure wherever that is, is a lovely place to visit... and stay in a hotel. Life here is certainly no round-the-clock vacation, though I'd love to try and make that case. Most of the time when people I know visit, they're here to see the the glitz and lights, not me... my apartment complex ain't on anyone's tour of Vegas. Thanks for visiting TheWordWire - no guest room required, please stop by anytime!

Thanks for sharing this terrific Big Easy memory. I'll be in New Orleans in a little over a month, and while I'm not ready to leave Michigan yet, I'll be excited to be on Bourbon Street. By the way, I, too, read A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES down in New Orleans - what an awesome book!
